Gymnastics FAQs
-
What happens if I am away for my gymnastics lesson?
What is a make-up lesson?
A make-up lesson allows your child to attend a class of the same level on a different day if they miss their regular session. These are available to students with a current learn-to-swim enrolment, subject to class availability. Please note, we can’t guarantee the same teacher or ideal time for your make-up class.
How do I register an absence for a make-up lesson?
You must register your absence via the online customer portal or by calling the centre at least two hours before your scheduled lesson commences. This ensures eligibility for a make-up class. Absences can be registered up to seven days in advance.
How many make-up lessons can I access?
Students are entitled to unlimited make-up lessons per year, as long as the enrolment is active and absences are correctly registered.
Can I book a make-up lesson more than a week in advance?
No. Make-up lessons can only be booked up to seven days in advance, due to frequent changes in class availability as children progress or families update their schedules.
What if I can’t attend my make-up lesson?
Make-up lessons cannot be cancelled, rescheduled, or re-booked. If your child misses a booked make-up lesson, it will be forfeited.
What if I forget to register the absence?
If you do not cancel your lesson in advance through the portal, the session will be marked as missed and you will not be eligible for a make-up class.
My lesson is early in the morning—how do I give enough notice if the centre isn’t open?
The two-hour notice applies to the time the lesson starts, not centre opening hours. You can register absences anytime via the online customer portal, including after hours. For centre opening times, please visit our website.
How long are make-up lessons valid for?
Each make-up lesson is valid for 90 days from the date of the missed class. If not used within that timeframe, it will expire and be forfeited.
What happens if my regular class falls on a public holiday?
If your lesson lands on a public holiday, it will be automatically marked as absent and a make-up lesson will be automatically applied to your account.
Are all lesson types eligible for make-ups?
No. Private and Access level lessons are not eligible for make-up classes. Please contact us to discuss suitable alternatives.
Do make-up lessons carry over if I cancel my enrolment?
No. If your Learn to Swim enrolment is cancelled, all unused make-up lessons will be forfeited.
-
Can I suspend my membership?
We offer unlimited make-up lessons for each member, plus a no-cost medical suspension. Please note that pool access is not available during the suspended period.
Medical suspensions are available at no charge for students who are unable to attend two or more consecutive lessons. Medical suspensions can be back-dated for one month and must be arranged in person or email to the centre and be accompanied by a supporting medical certificate.
Non-medical suspension is not permitted, with the exception of two week Summer Suspension offer over the December / January non-program period. Enrolled members will receive an email communication with the option to register for this suspension towards the end of the program year.
For more information on make up lessons and program fees please refer to our FAQs.

Can I take photos of my child at gymnastics?
Whilst the YMCA understand the capturing of your magic moments is important, the privacy of others must be respected.
For this reason we do not allow photos or videos to be taken in lessons or in the change room areas. -
Can my child use the pools outside their lesson?
Absolutely. All children become a member of the Boroondara Leisure and Aquatic Facilities. The students have unlimited access to the pools to practice their skills or to just have fun in the water with family and friends.
Please note that all our pools are subject to capacity limit as outline by the Victorian Government, and any space outside of lessons is subject to availability
-
Do lessons occur on public holidays?
Lessons are not conducted on gazetted public holidays. If you miss a lesson due to a public holiday you can arrange a make-up lesson as per our Make-Up Lesson Procedure.
Alternatively we recommend you make use of your membership benefits which include unlimited pool access at any of the Boroondara Leisure and Aquatic Facilities.Lessons are conducted seven days a week. Some families choose to enrol on a day that isn’t impacted by public holidays.
-
How do I cancel my membership?
Gymnastics memberships are perpetual direct debit agreements with no “lock in” period or cancellation fees; we simply need 14 days' written notice of cancellation.
-
How do I pay for lessons?
Convenient fortnightly direct debit payments encourage continual skill development with no re-enrolment process. Every second Thursday the agreed debit amount is withdrawn from your nominated bank account or credit card.
The debit pays for the day of the debit and the following thirteen days.
The cost of the 48 week program is divided evenly over 52 weeks (26 debits). Direct debits therefore occur beyond the program dates.
If a debit has failed, you will be notified via text and/or email on the debit date. A $10.00 fee is charged for any rejected debit. -
How are debits structured?
We offer a 48-week program each year. For your convenience, payments are reduced and spread evenly across all 26 fortnights of the year, instead of paying the full amount for the classes within each fortnight.
Example breakdown:If one class is $30 per week, the annual total would be:
- $30 × 48 weeks = $1,440 per year
This amount is then divided across 26 fortnightly debits:
- $1,440 ÷ 26 = $55.38 per fortnight
So instead of paying $60 for two classes each fortnight, the amount is averaged out to $55.38 per fortnight across the year.
Please note this amount is purely an example only. Actual class fees vary — please refer to our prices page for current rates. -
How will I know if my child is ready to move up?
All students in our program are continually assessed by the teacher for improvement and readiness for upgrading to the next level. Once they feel that your child ready they will notify the teacher in charge for a formal assessment.
Regular assessments are also conducted throughout the year to provide you an update on your child's progress. The teacher in charge's decision is final and he/she will discuss the outcome with the child / parent either face to face or via an email progress report.
-
What do we need to bring?
Please bring a water bottle to class.
Your child should wear comfortable clothes such as loose fitting shorts, pants and a t-shirt or singlet (or leotard). They'll also need to tie their hair back and remove jewellery.
-
What happens if my child has injured themselves and cannot be active for an extended period of time?
Medical suspensions are available at no charge for students who are unable to attend two or more consecutive lessons. Medical suspensions can be back-dated for one month and must be arranged in person or email and be accompanied by a supporting medical certificate.
-
What if my child becomes upset during their lesson?
Please be aware that it is not uncommon for young children to require a period of time to adjust to lessons. Most children will settle within a few weeks, however parents of preschool aged children can participate in lessons to provide additional support.
-
What qualifications and checks do our teachers have?
Our gymnastics program is run by a team of qualified gymnastics experts and is proudly affiliated with Gymnastics Victoria and Gymnastics Australia. All staff hold Working with Children Checks and have undergone a Criminal History Record screen and Safeguarding Children and Young People training.
-
Will my child receive a membership card?
Each student is issued with a membership card which must be scanned by Customer Service at every lesson to gain entry.
